Wellington is a small industrial town situated just off junction 2 of the M5 motorway and 7 miles to the south west of Taunton. The town was known as Weolingtun in the Anglo-Saxon period and major re-building took place after the fire of 1731, after which it became a centre of cloth making.
Many visitors and travellers pass the spotlit Wellington monument on the top of the hill overlooking the town which was built to celebrate the Duke of Wellington’s victory at the Battle of Waterloo.
Wellington was also the home of Fox, Fowler and Co which was the last commercial bank permitted to print their own banknotes in England and Wales.
