CG Fry & Son is continuing its long-standing commitment to traditional craftsmanship and timeless architecture with a collection of distinctive Arts and Crafts-inspired homes in Poundbury’s North West Quadrant.
For more than three decades, CG Fry & Son has played a major role in shaping Poundbury – the Duchy of Cornwall’s pioneering urban extension to Dorchester – helping to create a thriving mixed-use community renowned for its architectural integrity, walkable neighbourhoods and strong sense of place.
Inspired by the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement, the latest homes combine traditional architecture with modern comfort and energy efficiency. Characterful façades and carefully detailed brick and stonework sit alongside thoughtfully designed streets and green spaces.
Annabel Legg, Senior Sales Manager at CG Fry & Son, said: “One of the things that makes these latest homes so special is their sense of character. The architecture, landscaping and attention to detail all work together to create a neighbourhood that feels established and welcoming. We’re incredibly proud to be continuing our work at Poundbury and building homes that will be enjoyed for generations.”
Designer Ben Pentreath commented: “We always had a plan that the final stage of Poundbury, the North West Quadrant, would make reference to the great Edwardian ‘garden city’ and garden village movement. In designing this quarter of Poundbury, we have intentionally brought in more planting and deeper front gardens, and the design of the buildings draws from the great examples found in Hampstead Garden Suburb, Welwyn and Letchworth Garden Cities and their many beautiful buildings designed by Lutyens, Baillie Scott, Voysey and others. These examples often used ‘Queen Anne Revival’ architecture for more formal streets and buildings and then had a softer Arts and Crafts approach for informal streets – a richness that we’ve brought to Poundbury too.
“This period of architecture was incredibly influential at the time and created some of the most enduring examples of English urban design, so there are plenty of examples within Dorchester (including cottages built in the 1910s and 20s by the Duchy of Cornwall at the time) from which we have drawn inspiration. There is a simple palette of brick, slate, clay tile and render which belongs within the Poundbury code as a whole, but here gives a distinct character for this important final phase of the settlement.”
George Saumarez Smith of Adam Architecture said: “The Arts and Crafts was a pivotal moment for English architecture, developing a character of domestic buildings that felt welcoming and homely. A key part of this period was the importance of gardens, leading in time to the Garden City Movement which aimed to combine the best of urban and rural living in new settlements. In the North West Quadrant, we have sought to reflect the Arts and Crafts style through the use of soft materials, more varied and asymmetrical groups of houses, prominent roofs and chimney stacks, and deeper front gardens. The effect has been to form a new neighbourhood in this part of Poundbury with its own special and distinct character.”
Jason Bowerman, Senior Development Manager at the Duchy of Cornwall, said: “The success of Poundbury is the result of strong, long-term partnerships between the Duchy of Cornwall, architects, housebuilders and local stakeholders who share a commitment to creating a high-quality community. Together, we have demonstrated how thoughtful planning, quality design and a shared vision can create a thriving community that continues to attract people to live and work in the area.”
