Back to NewsSteve Walker has been crowned the Supreme Winner in the medium builder category at the NHBC Pride in the Job Supreme Awards 2025, for building homes of exceptional quality at Poundbury in Dorchester.
In previous rounds, Steve had already achieved a prestigious Quality Award, Seal of Excellence, and was honoured as the Regional Winner, before being awarded the ultimate national prize – for the eighth time!
Widely considered the ‘Oscars’ of the housebuilding industry, Pride in the Job celebrates site managers’ dedication to raising standards in housebuilding, showcasing best practice and rewarding excellence. The awards recognise the best site managers in the UK and are run by the NHBC (National House Building Council), the UK’s largest provider of new home warranties and insurance.
Judging is rigorous and the site managers are assessed across six key areas: consistency, attention to detail, leadership, interpretation of drawings and specifications, technical expertise and health and safety.
Steve followed his father into the housebuilding industry when he was 16 years old and now has over 50 years’ experience. He joined CG Fry & Son in 1990 and has been responsible for managing the company’s development at Poundbury – in partnership with the Duchy of Cornwall – since construction first began in 1993.
Commenting on his award win, Steve said: “Winning this award is a high point in what has been an incredible 32 year journey at Poundbury. While I am honoured by the title of Supreme Winner, I am most proud of the teamwork and dedication that goes into every single home – I have a truly brilliant team.”
He added: “I love nothing more than walking around Poundbury with my dog, Ria, and reflecting on each building and street scene – it’s a very special place to me.”
Philip Fry, managing director at CG Fry & Son, said: “We are incredibly proud of Steve; he’s an exceptional site manager and fully deserves this national recognition. His attention to detail is excellent and his success is a testament to his leadership and the hard work of his entire team.

Some of Steve’s colleagues were also acknowledged at the NHBC Regional Pride in the Job Awards. Grant Gibson won a Seal of Excellence Award for Jurston Fields in Wellington and Brendan Leech was also awarded a Seal of Excellence for Nansledan in Newquay.
